Book Review - Thelma the Unicorn

Thelma the Unicorn

About the Book
Thelma dreams of being a glamorous unicorn. Then in a rare pink and glitter-filled moment of fate, Thelma's wish comes true.

She rises to instant international stardom, but at an unexpected cost. After a while, Thelma realizes that she was happier as her ordinary, sparkle-free self. So she ditches her horn, scrubs off her sparkles, and returns home, where her best friend is waiting for her with a hug.

From award-winning author Aaron Blabey comes this joyful book about learning to love who you are...even if you don't have sparkles.

My Take on the Book
This was a book that was a ton of fun. Thelma is such a lovable character. The illustrations and the writing in this book were so fun for my whole family and it will be a ton of fun for you to read with yours too. If you have never met Thelma, you have to, she is a Unicorn you will never forget!

Book Review - Pig The Elf

Pig The Elf

About the Book
Santa was coming! 'Twas bigger than big!

No one loves Christmas more than Pig. And the world's greediest pug will stay up all night to get his presents! When Pig yips at Santa and finds himself joining in on the flying sleigh ride, things quickly get out of hand in a way that is pure Pig pandemonium.

My Take on the Book
We loved reading this Pig the Pug book. While we had not read the previous book, this one was a ton of fun to read with my daughters. They loved seeing the interaction between Pig and Trevor, and while the two dogs are very different, it was fun to see Pig get to learn a lesson in the end. Pig may be the dog that you love to hate but it was nice that he gets his in the end!

Book Review - Natural Disaster: I Cover Them. I am One

Natural Disaster: I Cover Them. I am One

About the Book
ABC News chief meteorologist Ginger Zee pulls back the curtain on her life in Natural Disaster. Ginger grew up in small-town Michigan where she developed an obsession with weather as a young girl. Ginger opens up about her lifelong battle with crippling depression, her romances that range from misguided to dangerous, and her tumultuous professional path. This cyclone of stories may sound familiar to some-it's just that Ginger's personal tempests happened while she was covering some of the most devastating storms in recent history, including a ferocious tornado that killed a legend in the meteorology field.

This book is for all the mistake makers who have learned to forgive others and themselves-even in the aftermath of man-made, or in this case Zee-made, disasters. It's a story that every young woman should read, a story about finding love and finding it in yourself.

Beloved by Good Morning America's audience, Ginger is a daily presence for millions. Zee's gained fame for her social media presence which is as unfiltered as Natural Disaster-from baby barf to doggy doo-doo. She's shattered the glass ceiling for women in meteorology, but admits here first, she's the one natural disaster she couldn't have forecast.

My Take on the Book
I was really interested in seeing how this book was. I lived in Grand Rapids when Ginger Zee was just starting with the weather and I followed her career as she moved up from one market to another. This was a fun book that really allows you to learn a ton more about Ginger Zee herself. You learn about her history, her highs, her lows and more. I loved how open she was with sharing herself, and if you love how she covers the weather you will also learn a ton about how this is an allegory for her life too.

Book Review - Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Book 3 The Ship of the Dead

Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, Book 3 The Ship of the Dead

About the Book
Magnus Chase, a once-homeless teen, is a resident of the Hotel Valhalla and one of Odin's chosen warriors. As the son of Frey, the god of summer, fertility, and health, Magnus isn't naturally inclined to fighting. But he has strong and steadfast friends, including Hearthstone the elf, Blitzen the dwarf, and Samirah the Valkyrie, and together they have achieved brave deeds, such as defeating Fenris Wolf and battling giants for Thor's hammer, Mjolnir. Now Magnus faces his most dangerous trial yet. His cousin, Annabeth, recruits her boyfriend, Percy Jackson, to give Magnus some pointers, but will his training be enough?

Loki is free from his chains. He's readying Naglfar, the Ship of the Dead, complete with a host of giants and zombies, to sail against the Asgardian gods and begin the final battle of Ragnarok. It's up to Magnus and his friends to stop him, but to do so they will have to sail across the oceans of Midgard, Jotunheim, and Niflheim in a desperate race to reach Naglfar before it's ready to sail. Along the way, they will face angry sea gods, hostile giants, and an evil fire-breathing dragon. Magnus's biggest challenge will be facing his own inner demons. Does he have what it takes to outwit the wily trickster god?

My Take on the Book
This is a great conclusion to this great series of books. All of the books have been strong and while I think a few others had a stronger story this one was still a lot of fun, with a ton of great characters as always. I love to experience the story through the eyes of the characters' and these books really allow you to do that in such a fun way!

This book allows you to gain a much better understanding into all the characters within the book. The plot of the book ties up wonderfully but also leaves room for the series to continue the series. Rick Riordan again did not disappoint in this great book and if he does choose this series, I for one will be back for more!

Book Review - Wallace the Brave

Wallace the Brave

About the Book
"Walace the Brave is a little taste of classic comics from the past."
The Huffington Post

Welcome to Snug Harbor! Will Henry's Wallace the Brave is a whimsical comic strip that centers around a bold and curious little boy named Wallace, his best friend Spud and the new girl in town, Amelia. Wallace lives in the quaint and funky town of Snug Harbor with his fisherman father, plant loving mother and feral little brother, Sterling.

My Take on the Book
I have been a fan of this comic for some time so I was very excited to find that they finally put it into a book. The book itself is so much fun and the characters and the artwork are so fun to read and engage with as a reader. There are so many parts within this book where I found myself laughing out loud and you will too! This is a quick read and so many of the adventures brought me back to my own childhood and I think others will find that the comic will do the same for them as well. If you have never read this comic before pick this up as you will not be disappointed!

Book Review - Get to the Point!

Get to the Point!

About the Book
Champion Your Best Ideas!

Every time you communicate, you're trying to do something, change something, or move someone to action. You're trying to make a point. But the only way to make a point is to have a point. And the surprising truth is, very few communicators know their points or even understand what a point is, rendering them pointless.

Communications expert Joel Schwartzberg says a point is not just a topic, an idea, or a theme. A real point is a proposition of value. It's a contention you can propose, argue, illustrate, and prove. In this concise and practical book, you'll learn to identify your point, strengthen it, stick to it, and sell it. Whether you want to improve your impact in speeches, staff meetings, pitches, emails, PowerPoint presentations, or any other communication setting, Schwartzberg's novel approach teaches you how to go from simply sharing a thought to making a difference. Which would you rather do?

My Take on the Book
Whenever you are in management, you are asked to talk to people in meetings, small groups and more and people are always looking to you to be able to share your ideas and thoughts in a way that all can understand. This book, while short, sweet and to the point, really gives you a ton of practical advice about things that you can do to become much more effective in your overall communication. The book is filled with step-by-step instructions on what you can do to have more people understand where you are going and follow your train of thought. I really loved how simple the concepts were and how easy they were to incorporate into your daily life. If you find yourself giving presentations, then this book is a perfect one for you to read as you will take a ton out of it and it will help you become a strong speaker.
