Book Review - Rather Outspoken: My Life in the News

About the Book
Dan Rather has been a reporter for 60 years, 44 of them at CBS News, and 24 of them as anchor and managing editor of the CBS Evening News. As the face and voice of CBS’s storied News Division, he relentlessly pursued the truth, no matter the cost to his own career.

In September 2004, Rather and his team at 60 Minutes II reported a story that would lead to his dismissal from CBS News. Despite his famous loyalty to the network, Rather would see his career and reputation called into question in the fallout.

This memoir by Dan Rather -- one of the most pre-eminent journalists of our time -- is told in a straightforward and conversational manner so that you hear his distinctive voice on every page. Rather, -- who has won every prestigious journalism award in his distinguished career -- discusses all the big stories from his decades of reporting. This very personal accounting includes (but is certainly not limited to) his dismissal from CBS, the Abu Ghraib story, the George W. Bush Air National Guard controversy, his coverage of the JFK assassination, the origin of "Hurricane Dan" as well as inside stories about all the top personalities Dan has either interviewed or worked with over his remarkable career.

The book will also include Dan's thoughts and reflections on the state of journalism today and what he sees for its future, as well as never-before-revealed personal observations and commentary. Rather reveals what lead him into investigative journalism, what really happened behind the scenes at CBS and how his new work at HDNet’s Dan Rather Reports might be his best yet in this fascinating memoir.

My Take on the Book
I was always impressed with the reporting and class of Mr. Rather. I used to watch him on the news for many years and I was in complete shock when he was let go from his post on the evening news. This book is a testament to his career and allows the reader to see behind the scenes of many of the highlights of the days when he was reporting. The book gives so much insight into the background of this icon. What I loved was the open and honest dialogue that Mr. Rather has with his readers as you continue to get to see the journalist behind the man that many of us got to know and love over the years. The book was an easy read that will keep you engaged from beginning to end (at least it did for me).

Not a Dan Rather fan personally, but my grandparents have constantly watched and trusted his viewpoint for years -- I'm sure this book will appeal to them on just that reason. Any recommendation as far as audio book reviews -- its what they prefer. I know the audio book is being featured on this great literary AM talk radio show I follow called The Book Report -- its aired here in New York on WOR 710 and I catch up online as well. I think I'll check out that review and then decide.
